Leonid Keller’s artistic process begins with an exploration of pre-existing images. They are chosen specifically for their association with ideologies, political fanaticism, the abuse of power, and cultural identity, drawing on references that are not arbitrary but deeply rooted in our collective visual memory.By rearranging the material into fictional constellations of visual, textual, formal and colour elements, as well as objects, historical and temporal bonds dissolve, allowing new narratives to emerge. Leonid Keller aims to create imagery that addresses societal issues and challenges our approach to dominant worldviews.Leonid Keller’s work incorporates various media, such as collage, drawing, sculpture, screenprinting, photography, and video.contact(@)leonidkeller.com ︎Solo Exhibitions Upcoming: 07.2026 Sägewerk Rumplmayr, Emmanuel Walderdorff Galerie05.2025 - Paper Positions Berlin, The Curve Gallery05.2024 - Interwoven Spaces. From The Archivessolo booth at Paper Positions Berlin, 2025The Curve GalleryThe graphite drawings in the series From The Archives (2025) draw upon a collection assembled over many years: personal documentation, found photographs, international magazines, and illustrated books form the source material. Through reinterpretation, fragmentation, and deliberate shifts in context, ambiguous visual worlds emerge that oscillate between documentation and artistic narrative. From The Archives reflects on the fragility of visual certainties and insists on the legitimacy of multiple readings.

A Tale of Becoming Dust, 2024olive wood, concrete, steel pedestalscharcoal on stone wallvarious dimensions

The installation A Tale of Becoming Dust for Paxos Biennale 2024 explores themes of growth and decay. Set in the ruin of Kagatika, processed olive tree trunks filled with concrete rest on pedestals of construction reinforcement and are partially burned, evoking tension between nature and human intervention while reflecting the irreversible impact of human actions.

A charcoal mural, based on a 1960s photograph, depicts two young Paxiot women standing beside a tree, each holding it with one hand—a gesture open to interpretation as both protective and an attempt to hold onto something fleeting. Looking out at the viewer from the island's past, the women serve as witnesses to growth and decay, reminding us of our shared responsibility in determining the trajectory of our environment, morality and society as a whole.

installation view

After conducting research with some of the last remaining weavers in northern Portugal, Leonid Keller developed the interdisciplinary spatial installation Interwoven Spaces (2024). The installation at INSTITUTO Porto reflects on the decline of traditional craftsmanship in Portugal and worldwide. Within the space, visitors encounter the repetitive hand movements intrinsic to artisanal practice, prompting reflection on the consequences of neglecting tactile skills within global economic systems. The work raises questions about what may be lost in this transition, emphasizing the importance of preserving manual skills in an increasingly digitalized world.

Kings, Queens, And Other States Of Mind (2022) brings together works in various media as a spatial installation at Kiezkapelle, a former mourning chapel in Berlin. The narrative is shaped by re-visioned visual worlds that articulate the humanist ideal, engaging with the challenges arising from a post-anthropocentric worldview. The exhibition appropriates visual references from Greek antiquity, considered the foundation of humanism. This imagery, anchored in our collective memory, encounters historic and contemporary images of society, power, and spirituality. Through bronze and concrete sculptures that evoke non-human elements from nature, Leonid Keller invites viewers to perceive thr human in relation to the non-human and to conceive of them as inseparable. ︎

Miosis Leaflet, 2023 digital print 30 X 40 cmMIOSIS (2023) is a site-specific installation by the artist duo Leonid Keller at Projektor of HAWK Hildesheim. It was visible from the inside AND the outside. MIOSIS references the former Neue Berliner Sternwarte, which stood in close proximity to the current Projektor location. The rapid growth of Berlin towards the end of the 19th century made observation activities nearly impossible due to the increasing ambient light. In 1913, the observatory relocated to Potsdam, where it stands today as part of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam.

Numerous historical celestial photographs* rest in the astronomical archives of the institute. These fragile glass plates are not only of scientific interest but also poignant artifacts of a millennia-old longing to perceive the universe - initially with the naked eye and later with the aid of technical instruments - to comprehend our position in this cosmos.Inspired by the historically rich context of the exhibition venue, Leonid Keller’s installation MIOSIS addresses the visibility of the night sky and invites us to reflect on its impact on our sense of place and cultural structures. In this context, MIOSIS simultaneously explores the growing invisibility of the night sky in nearly all regions of the Earth. This results from glare and artificial light that is reflected into the night sky, illuminating it.*All the motifs in the exhibition are part of the APPLAUSE (Archives of Photographic PLates for Astronomical USE) glass-plate archive, which was created in a collaboration between four German institutes (including the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam, AIP) in the project ‘Digitization of Astronomical Photographic Plates’ funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). www.plate-archive.org.

неваляшка (short version)
Video, 31,11’, loop

IF (2020) engaged with different thematic spheres across four rooms of the historic Villa Francke in Potsdam, entering into dialogue with the building's turbulent history. This history is intimately interwoven with German colonialism, Nazi occupation, and later, during the GDR era, with the Soviet military presence.
White Blue Red is based on press images from the August Coup in Moscow in 1991, which precipitated the collapse of the Soviet Union. Drawn from the photo book „The Coup in Russia“ published that year, the blue-red tableau shows a dismantled hammer and sickle composed of enlarged photographic details. This rearrangement of the communist emblem addresses the radical destruction and decades-long reconfiguration of a political system.
Untitled (Lenin): Lenin‘s ideology rests in book form on a pedestal supported by four Lenin busts—they literally bear the weight of the ideology. By inverting the traditional monument structure the work questions who or what is truly being memorialized: the individual or the system of thought they represent.Неваляшка (Nevalyashka), a classic Russian roly-poly toy that always returns upright, appears as looped video eternally staggering, echoing the political instability of the former Soviet Union.
